Once the mystic Julian of Norwich of 14th century England received a visionary insight, which she termed a “showing.”  She was shown a nut-sized version of the entire cosmos--

[Christ] showed me a little thing, the size of a hazelnut,
lying in the palm of my hand.
It was as round as a ball, as it seemed to me.
I looked at it with the eyes of my understanding and thought, “
What can this be?”

My question was answered in general terms in this fashion: “It is everything that is made.”  I marveled how this could be, for it seemed to me that it might suddenly fall into nothingness, it was so small...

In response, Julian heard inwardly--

“It lasts....because God loves it.  And in this fashion all things have their being by the grace of God....”.

When I read this by Julian, I am reminded of the white bubbling crest of a fountain, and think of God's fountaining the whole universe into being at this instant, and we are the bubbling crest of that creation, freshly coming from the Presence of God, moment by moment: the Now Moment of God's Presence.

Does the Now Moment of God's Presence, as the immediate Cause of your being, have meaning to us in daily life?  What is your experience of this?

Julian of Norwich and the Hazelnut Empty Great Quote!

I love this quote by Julian of Norwich. It calls to mind the Christian analogue for Emptiness and Nothingness that seems so vital in the mystical awakening process.

Thanks Clint for your comment.  Do you care to elaborate?  Thanks for pointing to the significance of "emptiness" here, because I think it has both ontological meaning, and a variety of others meanings in the Christian journey. Your comment invites to give further thought to this dimension of her comment.

If you care to elaborate: What is meaning and significance of "Emptiness" and "Nothingness" for you in terms of this passage from Julian's writing, and how is this meaningful to your journey?
